Everest Base Camp surrounded by jagged peaks & the emerald green Gokyo Lake (depth 43m) is a must for trekkers wanting some variety and added beauty!
Venture off the beaten track and get to experience 2 amazing destinations on this 17 day Everest Base Camp With Gokyo Lake trek that includes this amazing high altitude lake surrounded by towering mountains. This trek is more physically demanding than the standard EBC trek due to the higher altitudes when passing through Cho La Pass (5420m) in the Khumbu Everest region. The trail takes us west towards the Gokyo Lakes, crossing the Ngozumpa Glacier (the longest glacier in the world at 36km). To the east, the path joins the Everest Base Camp Trek in the midst of two sprawling valleys – Gokyo and Khumbu with mesmerizing views of the Himalayas along the trail. Views of the Gokyo Lakes and Mt. Gokyo Ri (5357m) will leave you spellbound!
On the trail to Everest Base Camp, we pass through many Sherpa villages and will get a first-hand experience of their hospitality and Buddhist culture. This high altitude trek will take you to Gokyo Ri (5,357m), Cho La Pass (5,367m), Kala Patthar (5,550m) and Everest Base Camp (5,364m). On our journey be prepared to see a variety of flora and fauna with a possible sighting of Snow Leopard and of course Yak grazing in these high altitude pastures. Everest Base Camp will leave you with a feeling of nostalgia as you recall the great mountaineer Edmund Hillary and his companion Tenzing Sherpa who passed through here on the way to the summit of Mt. Everest. The added highlight of this trek is the stunningly beautiful emerald green Gokyo Lake.
Leaving Kathmandu we begin our journey by taking a short 40-minute flight to Lukla. On arriving at Lukla we begin our trek along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River before arriving at the culturally rich and historic town of Namche Bazaar where we spend time acclimatizing and taking a few short hikes that will offer us some exquisite panoramic mountain views. The next day we follow a high altitude trail taking us to Dole and Machhermo nestled in the Dudh Kosi River valley just north of Dole and south of Gokyo. We then cross the Cho La Pass (5,420m) following a rugged high altitude trail before crossing the Khumbu Glacier and Gorak Shep. Finally, we reach Everest Base Camp and get a glimpse of the through the track of the immense Khumbu Glacier, the world’s highest and longest glacier extending from 4,900m and reaching to 7600m. Heading down we visit Kala Patthar (5643m) renowned for its spectacular views of Mt. Everest and other gigantic peaks.
Alert: There will be a slight change in the itinerary, especially the days when you take the domestic flights. In April & May and October & November of 2019, the government shifted the operation base for flights to and from Lukla (This is the actual starting point of the trek) from Kathmandu to Manthali, a town 4 to 5 hours drive away from Kathmandu. As a result, anyone who signed up for any Everest trek or climb had to go to Manthali to catch their flight. They moved the base because of renovation and high air traffic for Kathmandu's airport which is also the only international airport in Nepal. This change in the airport will continue in 2020 as well. Though right now there have been direct flights, we expect from March the airport will be shifted.
The following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek. It is important you do not forget the essential items, as this will determine your comfort and safety on the trek. Equally important is that you do not burden yourself with unnecessary equipment on the trek.
(Note our company guide will carry the medicines and first aid kits during the trek. However, we recommend you bring your personal first-aid kit as well)
You will be accommodated in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. During the trek, we will be staying at lodges/ teahouses. You may find comfort and better quality teahouses - having attached bathroom - until Namche which is a thriving town seeing many more tourists and a greater range of accommodation. It should be noted that at higher elevations the quality of accommodation may not be as good, with more basic rooms with the bare necessities.
In Kathmandu, your hotel includes breakfast, whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided during the trek. A staple food of the Khumbu region is potatoes, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew and Tibetan bread. Sherpas’ started farming potatoes when the first seeds were introduced to the region in the early 90s. There is a limited choice of food at higher elevations and except many potato dishes. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates – an excellent source of energy needed at high altitudes.
We use a private car for sightseeing and for the airport to hotel pick and drop off. We do not have to use public transportation or local buses during the trek. Our only flights are from Kathmandu to Lukla and return.
EBC is a challenging trek where you often have to walk 6-7 hours a day. You don’t need past experience of hiking or trekking but if you have done any kind of trekking activities then it is always a plus!. We have met people from all walks of life, shapes and sizes who have completed the trek. The only difficult part is when altitude sickness strikes and the effect that it can have on your body. Before leaving for Nepal it is good if you can prepare yourself physically by increasing your stamina and oxygen intake.
Remember – The better prepared – the more enjoyable your trek!

I highly recommended this trip and sherpa Expedition and Trekking Company. You get truly immersed in Nepalese Himalayan culture. Challenging, steep and gorgeous, I would recommend this trip to anyone adventurous without hesitation. It's tough but do-able! Pain is only weakness leaving the body!
This was a once a lifetime experience. A Beautiful lake and fantastic trek, led by a great tour leader, assistants, and porters. Tea houses and food were good considering the remote location.
